WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS SWEEPING THE NATION

Melanson Law Office P.C. June 15, 2014

In many cases, society is now reaping the consequences of that time, and facing the fact that even just 30 years ago, a large amount of police work was done without the benefit of hard science evidence.

It does not take much searching to come up with a handful of wrongful imprisonment cases, and it seems like more and more pop up every single day. According to the Innocence Project, an outside group dedicated to helping the wrongfully convicted, there have been 316 post-conviction DNA exonerations so far in the US , and that number shows no signs of slowing down.

They go on to say that the leading cause for wrongful convictions is invalidated or improper DNA evidence, eyewitnesses who misidentify the defendant, false confessions or incriminating statements, and prosecutorial misconduct.

It goes without saying that with all of our technology, future wrongful convictions are likely to slow down significantly, but in the short term, improper arrests that took place years ago will still continue to surface. The value and importance of advocacy groups like the Innocence Project can not be underestimated.

If you or a loved one is being imprisoned wrongfully, do not hesitate to get in touch with a skilled attorney. They may be able to assist you in getting justice.
